After the holidays come the leftovers. But even without big celebrations we sometimes get a bit over the limit with food and the way we store it. Did you know that apart from the artificial deodorizing agents you could employ some cheap green remedies to get rid of fridge odor?

You will be surprised to learn that all five options in my list are cheaper than you thought and you already have them in your kitchen, so why not try them next time you feel bad smell coming out of your fridge!

Before taking the first step though, I would like to remind you to place your food correctly in the fridge and to avoid storing food in open containers, so that the smells don’t blend. Once the smells from different foods combine foul-smelling chemicals are produced due to the low temperatures inside the fridge. Regularly check the expiration dates of your stored food and compost it.

Here are 5 natural ways to get rid of fridge odor

Make sure your fridge is clean. If not, turn it off, take everything out while it is defrosting, store the food on the balcony if it is cold enough outside, or in a cooler. Clean all the shelves and drawers with a thick paste of baking soda and water. Not only will you remove food stains but odor as well.

You can then continue deodorizing your fridge with baking soda. Place an open container with baking soda inside and let it absorb the smells for at least 24 hours.

If baking soda doesn’t help, you can also distribute freshly ground coffee evenly on a plate and put it in the fridge for 24 hours. Coffee is known to absorb smells effectively. Instead of throwing the coffee away after the 24-hour stay in the fridge you can mix it with soil and use it as a fertilizer for your home flowers.

Another option you can consider is cutting an onion in half and placing it in the empty fridge overnight. Remove the onion and leave the door of the fridge open for a while.

To freshen the smell of your fridge (with or without using the onion) you can also soak a piece of cotton wool in vanilla and leave inside for 12 hours which will produce a lovely fresh and clean aroma.

With these tips, you can easily keep your kitchen and fridge clean and fresh for a minimum price. Just remember that a fridge smells only as bad as its contents. Take care to choose your food wisely and to store it appropriately and you will rarely need to deodorize.

Today marks the beginning of a new program here on Green Components: our own green products buying guides. We’ve started things off with a summertime buying guide for sunscreen. Find out about the environmental impacts of sunscreen, compare sunscreens and check out our top picks for this summer.

Over the coming months we will be adding green buying guides for several product types, from home improvements and garden, to personal care and cleaning products. Because our buying guides are comprised of green products that have been hand -chosen, -reviewed and -researched by Green Components editors, please be patient while we add to the database of buying guides. Thankfully, we’ve implemented a database interface that allows us to easily update the buying guides as new information becomes available.

Our goal is to provide up-to-date information and product comparison for green-minded shoppers. Each buying guide contains useful information about environmental impacts, personal safety notes, as well as featured, best value and greenest product recommendations. Each buying guide includes a product comparison chart listing the top green products, prices and our GC rating, as well as other criteria dependent on product type. We select products that are the greenest and most widely available. Our GC rating is determined by overall greeness and customer reviews from several leading consumer review sources.

PowerFilm offers a variety of really useful and downright cool green products including several portable solar chargers. The company sells both civilian and military grade solar chargers. One of the civilian solar chargers that recharges AA batteries, comes with USB ports, weighs around 5 ounces and costs $80. This company offers solar chargers for several different levels of power. These come in folding solar panels, rolling solar panels and custom solar panel cases.

Originally developed for the military, PowerFilm’s waterproof solar charger can provide electricity for everything from laptops and cellphones to bilge pumps and car batteries. The cadmium-free solar cells are mounted on thin film, which sits on a soft plastic layer, allowing you to roll it up for easy packing. The high-end version can run a laptop for about a half hour for every hour of sunlight it collects. You’ll need a 12-volt cigarette-lighter adapter for portables, and recharging batteries requires an optional charging module. And if you need more power, you can daisy-chain multiple units for up to 20 amps of output.
